After several years of being a part of the Seattle-based band Noxious Emotion, the trio of Darren Miller, r Willhelm and Fritter formed backandtotheleft in 2003.  Since their formation this trio have been working hard on putting together their first tracks for their debut release.  For their first release they enlisted the help of Tom Shear of Assemblage 23 fame and released their album Obsolete on Tom's 23db label.  After this release in 2004 they went on tour with Assemblage 23 where they quickly gained recognition in the music scene.  By 2005 they gained the attention of Metropolis Records who decided to re-release their debut album for the general audiences.  With this move this band should be able to launch their career and move into the EBM/Futurepop mainstream.

The sound of this band is not-surprisingly quite similar to that of Assemblage 23.  Much like the debut album of Angels and Agony followed that of their mentor and producer Ronan Harris of VNV Nation, this band follows in the style of their producer Tom Shear.  The pounding beats and melodic synth structures of this band provide something that is very dance-friendly and that the synth fans should really love.

With a nice start to their new career, this band has taken their past success and talents and taken off on this new journey.  Be sure to check out selections from this band by stopping by their website and also listening to Gothic Paradise radio.  We will watch with interest as their sound continues to develop and new releases come to light.

Obsolete - Review

After hearing bits from this group here and there I was pleased to see that Metropolis Records had picked up this band to re-release their debut album. I knew that they would get some proper promotion with this release and I think that fans will really pick up on this release for what it is.  The disc contains ten fast-paced tracks and a remix of "Misstep" by Assemblage 23.  The original version of this track kicks off the album and immediately displays the awesome nature of the music from this group.  The solid vocals are backed by pounding beats and a myriad of melodic synth structures.  The lyrical content of this album also follows in the path of other greats keeping hope in true thoughtfulness alive in this music genre.

While the obvious EBM sound on this album is a bit predictable, the musical styles from this band manage to be intriguing and interesting enough to listen to the album in it's entirety as the beat drives the music on from one track to the next.  "Conquest" follows pace and style with these same structural elements driving the message of the song home to the listener.  The variation between tracks is ever small enough to maintain a homogenous feeling, yet keeps the listener interested with the slight variety.  Of course the driving beats and synth structures are the real strength behind this album as we shift into a slightly slower, but no-less driving and pounding track "False Alarm".  The melodic vocals are the most notable change in this track drifting away from any monotony present in other tracks.

The following tracks pick up in creativity as the beats slow down on "Imperfection" and the stylish structures improve.  The title track "Obsolete" has quickly become a favorite of mine with the awesome synth loops that are really captivating.  The pounding beats keep the pulse alive as the listener is sucked right into this album.  The music continues to drift on in this moving style through tracks like "Heaven's Isolation", "The Happy Song" and finally to "The Land of Make-Believe".  The finale to this album is the Assemblage 23 remix of "Misstep".  As you can imagine the style itself doesn't change much, but basically presents us with just another interpretation of the instrumental backdrop and structure of the song and is definitely well done.

This is definitely an album that fans of driving EBM and synthpop will want to pick up.
