Pure - Review

It's great the Dancing Ferret decided to release this new album from these gothic rockers out of Germany.  This new album is something to be snatched up and savored by goth rock fans around the world. Presented with eleven tracks mixed in the style of their powerful gothic rock with just a touch of electronics to add a solid foundation to the music.  It comes packaged with a small booklet containing lyrics and a photo of the band amongst other information about the members.

For those not familiar with this band, they are composed of the trio of Mel (vocals, programming), Fred B. (bass, programming) and Scholli (guitars).  They compose a wide range of goth-friendly music with intelligent lyrics ranging from ballads to political and social commentary.  Mel's vocals provide a nice anchor and recognizable force which makes this band stand out from others.  While they may have fit in perfectly with the gothic rock movement of the 90's amongst bands such as Screams for Tina, The Wake and Garden of Delight, they have taken that style to a new level for the new millenium and created a killer sound for this album.

"Obsession" kicks off the album building slowly at first through the first verse and then takes off in a solid and steady rock fashion for the remainder of the song making this instantly a preferred track from the album.  At this point we're brought to the powerful piece and another favorite in the form of "SOS".  The track kicks off with some heavy string synths and some powerful beats that continue on carrying the track to new heights.  We're introduced to guest vocalist Carola as she provides some angelic backing vocals for a beautiful touch on this piece.

The album seems to be divided in half amongst these poweful moving pieces and slower works.  Among those that keep the edge and the beat moving are "For the Lost" which again slowly builds and ends in a powerful climax.  Later on we have "Rely On" which is a moving and uplifting piece not only in the lyrics but through the music as the edge slackens a bit and good old fashioned melody takes over for a really sweet piece of music.  Picking up the tempo and power is "Creep" that becomes one of those rock pieces that you just want to put on while driving down some endless, lonely highway.  "Shine" moves along a bit slower but has a bluesy swing to it and some intense keyboard and guitar work that have an excellent edge as we get closer to wrapping up the album

On the slower side of the spectrum, but lacking nothing in intensity we're presented with powerful ballads and pleading, emotional tracks like "Reason" and "Reach Me" among others.  While the tempo is slower, the passion is strong and makes this yet another masterpiece on this album full of them.  "Reach Me" follows much the same pattern, mainly a slow to mid-tempo track, but the guitars and percussion keep the intensity turned up a notch.  Really toning it down is "One Day" presented as the album begins to wane towards the end.  This piece is presented in pure ballad format with a slow beat, excellent thought-provoking lyrics and an emotional factor that keeps in touch with the feelings of the listener.  "Horizon" picks up the tempo a bit but remains a somber track that I think falls better under the slower half of the album but with a steady beat and excellent instrumental work to be enjoyed by all fans.  Finally, to wrap up the album we're presented with "Hide and Seek", the mother of all slow tracks on this disc with beautiful cello and piano providing the music and backdrop to Mel's somber vocals.  This beautiful piece is a real treat and perfect way to finalize the album.

There you have it in a few words.  This is an excellent album that you can't miss if you're a fan of any goth-related genre, especially fans of the 90's gothic rock style.
