Body of Work - Review

While I haven't been an avid collector of their work, I've been aware of and have enjoyed the music from The Empire Hideous from the early 90's when they appeared mainly on Cleopatra Records gothic rock compilations. Needless to say, they've been an influence and a recognizable name in the goth scene throughout the 90's.  So it's a nice treat to have this album released now which is a compilation of their works from the early 90's including three EP's for a total of 15 tracks.

Their style is a collection of post-punk, gothic rock that deathrock and punk fans have enjoyed for many years and we now see the influence in some of the newer bands releasing music today under these genres.  This disc portrays this sound an influence very well through these historical selections starting it all off with an all-time favorite of mine "Wild Wife".  This track shows the wild and crazy music providing the backdrop for Myke's reverberating deathrock style vocals and fun and catchy lyrics.  I think this band is a lot about having fun making and performing their music and it really shows in many of these tracks, especially as this piece fades and we're brought to "Devious Child", which has grown to be another favorite on this disc.  I think the title nearly says it all, and you can use your imagination within the context of the musical style of this band to understand what this track sounds like.

While this album spans four years of work and three EP releases, the overall style doesn't change too much.  The earlier tracks lean heavily on the post-punk, deathrock sound with vocals and music with a lot of reverb.  As the album progresses the sound becomes somewhat cleaner, but the overall style remains the same through so much of their work.  Even in the darker, more serious pieces like "Towers of Empty Hallways" or the symphonic introductory pieces "Opera March of the Empire" and "Power the Empire", the underlying influence and genre defining style remain intact.  The inclusion of the previously unreleased track "Locked Up Outside" is a nice bonus for those fans that may already have something from these works.

All in all this is a great disc and shows a nice history of the band and their excellent style.  I would say this is the case and great album with the exception of "Kissing Your Poison" which is ironically one of the tracks that most people have heard and unfortunately for me, kept me from investigating their music further.  But now is the time to make up for what we've missed in the form of this album, new for many of us, and a great way to gather their best music for other fans.  I think this release will convince many to go out and pick up their 2003 album Say Your Prayers.  Be sure to check them out if you haven't already.
