Empty - Open Aeon

Hailing from Sydney, Australia; the duo of Aaron Potter and Daniel Brunet are what makes up this project of somber, moody, dark EBM. We're presented with their debut EP on this disc presenting six fresh new tracks and a couple of additional remixes.

The album opens with "Ghost Beside You", an atmospheric, ambient industrial piece in the form of similar tracks from Front Line Assembly with that spacial, melodic distortion on the somewhat whispered vocals over layers of electronics and a somber, yet moving beat.  This piece is one of the overall highlights for the album with it's somber moods and emotionally driven lyrics and vocals.  Fans can catch an extra bonus with this song by visiting the website and downloading and viewing the video that goes with it.  There is an alternate remix "iammynewt remix"

"Blue" is the other highlight on this album with it's more melodic vocal take, though still mostly layered with that whispered distortion.  The layers of synths and electronics provide some great body to the track and this one even sports something of a somber danceable beat.  However, for those that live for the heavy hitting club tracks, AngelTheory provide their "ascension remix" of the track with some heavier beats that are a little better suited for the dance floor and it also clears up a little bit of the vocal distortion and brings the melodic nature out a bit more.

While the other tracks are still good, I found the added profanity in the samples or in the lyrics was a turn off for me and any other listeners who care.  "Torn" and "Scarred" have some very deep and thought-provoking lyrics, the addition of the breakbeats and synthetic guitar kind of distract from this latter piece.

So there you have it.  When I first heard this group I heard samples of "Blue" and "Ghost Beside You" and I was hooked, and as pointed out these pieces stand out on the album as highlights.  Hopefully as the band progresses they can build on this base and move away from the "shock" of profane lyrics and samples and delve into the thought-provoking world of creativity as shown in these two tracks.  Overall they have some great talent and excellent potential that we can hope will shine on future works to come.
