Hailing from Italy, Gothica was formed around 1995 by Alessandra Santovito (voice, keyboards) and Roberto Del Vecchio (programming, keyboards, voice).  This duo soon established themselves the musical world of gothic influenced neo-classical styles.  After a few demos and 3 years later in June 1998, they managed to sign with Cold Meat Industry.  In October 2000, they released their first full-length official release with Cold Meat/Cruel Moon International titled Night Thoughts.  This release helped to garner them some fame within this mystical music scene and three years later they have presented us with their second work of art, The Cliff Of Suicide.

When asked to describe their music, the first words that pop into my head are definitely Gothic, Dark, Mystical and Neo-classical, maybe even a touch of Ethereal, but I think the music is a little too dark to fit nicely in that genre.  This dark yet tranquil and beautiful nature sends the listener back several centuries through time when things seemed more romantic, mysterious and relaxed, at least in our minds' eye.  I believe this captivating and mesmerizing feeling is a prime goal of this music and these artists and they achieve it very well.

Since I am such a fan of the artists that are able to pull this style off in such a way, you can bet that you'll be able to hear plenty from this band on the Gothic Paradise Ethereal show.  Be sure to check it out, as well as visiting the band's page and find out more about them.

The Cliff of Suicide - review

Being quite familiar with this Italian duo's sound, when I heard about the new album I was immediately interested and looked forward to it with great anticipation.  When I got it in my hands I could hardly wait to hear it!  Since I'm a big fan already of the neo-classical music, especially those with a definite gothic period feel, it was no surprise that I wasn't disappointed.

These musicians capture this style perfectly and without flaw.  From the very first resonating and dark bombastic notes of "Nel Buio" to the final more ethnic percussion beats and smooth underlying string keyboards of "Where the Lilies Fade", the music is captivating and spellbinding.  The title track is one of the highlights for me, sung in English and easier for me to understand, yet it doesn't lose it's dark and mysterious meaning as if it were sung in Italian or one of the other Romantic or Latin-root tongues.  It is minimalistic and eerie in certain ways, yet dreamy and spellbinding in others, especially with the intro of waves crashing against rocks at the base of a cliff.

Each track is captivating in certain ways, the title track and the excellent Spanish poem "La Vida Es Sueño" by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, are done in a way that the vocals are the focus and the instrument that penetrates your very soul.  The beautiful instruments and music are the hammer that drive it home.  While the mostly instrumental and dark piece "Deep Lakes of the Soul" uses the music to paralyse the listener while the siren's vocals resonate in the background.

I don't think I can really say enough about this album, it has quickly become one of my favorites in the genre the more I listen to it each day.  It has been hard to take it out of my CD player to move on to others that also need to be heard.  I can easily recommend this to fans of this style of music and know that they won't be disappointed.
