It all started with an idea from two talented people in 2002. Franz Zambon and Valentina Buroni formed Iridio with an idea to capture a style that would help open up a new world to the listener as described by them, "they felt the need to find a new sound that could enrapture the listener and lead him to a timeless universe with no boundaries: a world made of pure emotion". I think this captures the description of their music perfectly. They capture the excellent styles of ethereal with an emotional gothic, medieval and celtic tone.

This duo combined their talents with those of a number of guest musicians and released their debut album Waves of Life. This sparked the interest of fans around the world and they did a number of live shows including an appearance at the Wave Gothic Treffen festival in Germany. They also got the attention of Dancing Ferret / Noir Records in North America. In 2007 we were presented with their awesome sophomore album Endless Ways which was released to more parts of the world now with the added exposure to their North American audience.

This is another excellent group that ethereal music fans can now enjoy as we are constantly searching for more great talent. Be sure to check them out and listen to selections here on Gothic Paradise radio.

Endless Way - Review

This was a brand new group to me when I received this album and so I had no idea what to expect, except that coming from Noir Records that it had to be along the lines of certain gothic or ethereal genre lines. So I put in the CD and started to listen and I was immediately won over. There was no need for the album to grow on me after listening over and over, I was sold with the first play and hopefully I can explain here a bit about why.

When we put this CD on we're immediately presented with a haunting and stunning combination of flute, piano, harp and cello as the backdrop to Valentina's beautiful vocals that begin to tell the story. This story is one that many people might be familiar with, one of a journey, whether physical or spiritual, it's a familiar journey to a far away land that our hearts and spirits long to visit. Through the awakening dream of "Golden Skies" we're set on the path to head out on our journey. So now we come to our "Time To Leave" which portrays the celtic musical background that this Italian duo presents to us. The metered poetic lilt is fun as this piece builds up the rush and excitement of setting out on an exciting journey. As the story goes on we move through a variety of emotions, struggles and accomplishments, all portrayed perfectly through the music at times festive with a fun song and dance theme while at others pensive and moody. In the end our journey takes us back home and to a realization of our own self and that "My home is only in my soul".

That is the story told by this beautiful album. Franz, Valentina and their myriad of guest musicians have done an incredible job with this album. Breaking out of the story and just thinking about individual pieces, they all stand perfectly on their own and become an example of excellent ethereal and medieval musical styles. I love the pensive nature of "Shadows and Fears" with the dark and somewhat moody expression of the music and vocals together. Immediately following this piece is the festive and fun selection "Sunrise Dancers" and reminds me of how much I love to dance and can imagine a group of friends playing this kind of fun music and singing and dancing around the fire as the song suggests. As the album wraps up the finale has quickly become a favorite of mine in it's simplicity and beauty. It's not a grand production but simply an accapella piece sung by Valentina and is absolutely stunning with no further explanation possible or necessary.

Any fan of beautiful ethereal music, whether modern, medieval or celtic in nature, will absolutely love this album. I think of groups like the obvious Dead Can Dance, Estampie and Qntal will love this album, but also some of their contemporaries that reside here on the pages of Gothic Paradise like Narsilion, Nova and Trobar de Morte will enjoy this group, so don't hesitate to pick it up, you won't be sorry, you will love it.
