Hailing from New York, Kokila has been playing piano, harp and recorder for several years.  In the 90's she started recording her music and released two full-length albums Enchanted Dreams and Magic and Mystery.  Then in 2004 she releases her largest work to date in the form of the 3-disc set Trilogy, which many have acclaimed as her best work.  Along with her musical talents, she spends time writing and has two novels forthcoming.

The music of Kokila is not something that normally finds it's way onto the pages or airwaves of Gothic Paradise.  However, the enchanted melodies, classical elements and celtic styles are all things that are quite prominent in the Gothic and Ethereal genres.  With this in mind when I heard samples from her works, I decided that this is something that fits well enough to be included here for readers and listeners to enjoy.  The enchanting styles of the piano, harp and record are beautiful, magical and inspiring.  It is something that all artists and many fans can certainly appreciate.

Kokila continues to perform live, mostly in the New York area.  Hopefully we'll be able to hear and see more of this talented artist.  In the meantime you can hear chosen selections on the Gothic Paradise Ethereal show.

Enchanted Dreams - Review

Even though this album was released several years ago, most people are probably just discovering the great music from this artist.  With that in mind it's a pleasure to include a short review of this album for readers to check out.

Containing nineteen short but beautiful instrumental tracks, this album contains something that all lovers of the various classical and celtic music styles will really enjoy.  From the first enchanting piano notes on the title and opening track "Enchanted Dreams", including the hauntingly beautiful harp on "As It Was" to the spellbinding celtic piece "The Quest", the music is captivating and easily holds the listener's attention.  The music on every track is perfect for meditation, for relaxing, while working or in any situation where a magical atmosphere is desired.

Most tracks follow a fairly standard instrumental flow, some softer and slower than others, but all are enchanting on one way or another.  "Bridge to Avalon" captures the imagination and based on the title you can imagine a group of knights, pilgrims or a clan making the journey through a magical place.  My favorite track on the album is "The Quest" which captures this feeling perfectly and is an obvious choice for most fans of celtic and ethereal music.  The distant pipes fade in and bring to the imagination a scene from Braveheart, King Arthur or The Lord of the Rings trilogy with the magic and mystery involved.  It's just plain beautiful and enchanting beyond mere words.

The album wraps up with several more excellent tracks from piano, harp and various electronics for added ambience.  But in the end the listener is left feeling better, uplifted and inspired.
