Hailing from Argentina, Gabriel Carbone (voice, percussion, keyboard) and Fernando Dieguez (voice, percussion) formed Kutna Hora in 2001.  This duo set out to create their dark folk music and soon had some live performances and demos released.  One of the first demos recorded was "Oratorium" which was later included on the STKM compilation Ducasse.  They soon released their debut album Will or Nothing which was a limited release containing thirteen tracks.  This was released on Twilight Records, home to other well-known artists including Kirlian Camera, Ecodalia and Lamia.  2005 brought the next release Obsession, Faith, Perseverance which was also released in Europe on the Black Rain sub-label Ars Musica Difundere.

The musical style of this band has definite folk elements with the acoustic guitar, combination of dreamy synths to marching percussion and thoughtful lyrics.  Mixing electronics into these folk elements are a nice twist for added variety and intensity.  There are similarities to other related artists like Death in June, Current 93 and recent german greats Dies Natalis.  Fans of many of these bands will enjoy the musical direction of this band.

With their solid background and positive direction, this band is something we can watch and hope for more to come.  Check out selections on the Gothic Paradise radio shows.

Obsession Faith Perseverance - Review

As a fan of great dark folk music I was able to relate quickly with the music from this album. The music mixes folk guitars with the occasional electronics and marching beats.  The disc contains thirteen of these dynamic tracks.

The album is kicked off by "our lady of sedlec" with samples of The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc and building up to the electronic layers and marching beats.  This track is a highlight of the album for me with this mix of elements from the samples to the layered electronics and moving beat.  These styles vary throughout the album including more samples from The Messenger in "The Voice of God".

The music on this album is excellent with all of the great elements of dark folk music in the vein of Death in June and Dies Natalis.  The vocals  and vocal arrangements could possibly use some work.  It seems there is some distortion on the vocals at times and some of the unison with the music really doesn't go well with the style of music.  But as you go on through the album the music and compositions are excellent.  From the slow beats of "Day of Wrath" and the dreamy nature of "Farlands", the music moves along great.

After thirteen of these tracks the album wraps up with the finale "Last Song".  This track winds down after nearly nine minutes and it's a great way to finish the album.  So there you have it, a nice folk album that folk fans can enjoy.
