A Secret Sound - Review

This was a surprising new act to appear on the Kalinkaland label with a style bordering between ethereal and dreampop similar to Chandeen and Cocteau TwinsThe band is composed of the duo Jacques Henry and Geraldine Le Cocq.  They present us with their debut album A Secret Sound here which features this dreamy, yet upbeat and fun sound across a dozen excellent pieces.

The album starts off with their upbeat style with "How Does It End" which features some light percussion and a moving rhythm.  This gives way to "Mass Anasthesia" which keeps the music and rhythm flowing.  These two pieces present the dreampop aspect of this band introducing just a bit of edgy guitars in the background for a familiar sound for fans of the ethereal, goth and shoegazer genres, while including some fun electronics and synths along with a moving beat.  All tracks present Geraldine on vocals with her dreamy, attractive yet cheerful vocals.  Other pieces along these lines of the moving, upbeat dreampop style include "Humane & Live", which has quickly become another favorite of mine, along with the moving, yet somber moods of "Hoary Man" and "Dripping Mind".

These upbeat sounds comprise about half of the album while the other half is split somewhat between some smooth midtempo grooves like "Hunted" which in itself varies between dreampop and these sultry sounds.  However, "Death & the City" and "Chimera" really bring on the jazzy elements in their foundation and sport some groovy styles.  For the fans of heavenly ethereal music there are some really nice selections on here as well including the ethereal, shoegazer treat "Resolve".  This dreamy piece is captivating with it's blend of somber backing electronics and guitars over some slow, subtle percussion.  Throw "Secret Sound" into the mix and you really have a dreamy mix of music on this album as this one quickly becomes a favorite ambient, ethereal piece to listen to.

Overall this is a nice cohesive album brought together through the related, yet varied styles of dreampop and ethereal music.  With a dozen tracks and a little extra hidden piece on the end of the last track, there is plenty of material here for fans to really enjoy.  Great for fans of Chandeen and Cocteau Twins along with other related female vocal fronted bands.
