Volk Und Armee... - Review
Feindflug is the project of Banane and Felix and here we have their latest album (2005) titled Volk Und Armee.... Over the years this band has made a name for themselves on the Black Rain label in producing a powerful, yet oftentimes melodic version of power noise music. However, also over the years they've set up one style and stuck to it, over-the-top military beats, synth loops and a few WWII samples and themes. "[Stukas] Im Visier" was their golden egg and since then it's been hard to match it in style and class. While this album comes close, with fourteen tracks they are bound to come up with something close.
This album starts out strong and just keeps going, so much so that unless you're really in the mood for harsh pounding music for 70 minutes, you may need to listen to it in two or more sittings, definitely not something you try and put on as background music while you're sitting at an office or desk at work. It's definitely a great disc to get the adrenaline pumping and as a mood shift to pick up the intensity, possibly at a dance club or briefly in a drive in the car, etc.
Favorite tracks include the powerful militaristic piece "Truppenschau" (OK, so they're all militaristic, but this one is over-the-top), and "Atherkrieg" with the awesome twist they pull off in the harsh percussion/synth mixture that's impossible to describe. It's not all entirely fast-paced music, "Einmarsch" starts the album off slow, steady and heavy, a combination that I love in powerful electro-industrial music. They build on this, picking up the pace across several tracks and then finally wrapping up with the bonus track "TSFKS" featuring Bluthund with more of the expected harsh sounds.
In reality, because in this breed of power noise there doesn't seem to be much variety, that's really about all there is to this album. Overall, piece by piece it's a great work, but taken as a whole it all blends together so much and as the genre indicates, you have to be in the mood to listen to over an hour of harsh, industrial, instrumental noise.
