Out of the Darkling Light Into the Bright Shadow - Review
Peter Bjargo is the mastermind behind long-time legendary neo-classical band Arcana and Gustaf Hilderbrand is a solo musician that has released his album Starscape on Cyclic Law and also his project Lithium on the Cold Meat Industry label. These artists have long been friends and their musical interests and talents bring them together on this collaborative album. This simple digi-pack album brings us ten of their collaborative experimental pieces featuring a mixture of electronic percussion, various ambient soundscapes and somber experimental moods.
Once again for experimental, instrumental music my attention span doesn't last that long. Though from time to time I find something that's really captivating, this album is excellent background music, but not something that I would recommend as a new hit album. The spatial ambience on tracks like "Black Codex" flows well and brings the myriad of background sounds together for a thick woven supportive piece for day-to-day activities. Other pieces pulsate with the electronic percussion providing the background such as "Desire to be Initiated" and "Silence and Circumspection".
The music blends very well from one piece to the next.  This tends to be the case enough that I never knew when I was through listening to "Skriptum" and was actually in the middle of two or three tracks later on "Voice of Silence". For an ambient album I think this is the actual goal and can't really be faulted, but at the same time relates how there isn't much uniqueness between the pieces and it ends up sounding more like one long 60 minute piece than 10 four to six minute tracks.
Overall this is a good ambient album. For those more familiar with ambient artists like Vidna Obmana and Steve Roach, this is more along that style of ambient music that the dark, brooding, melodic and bombastic works of some of Peter's other projects.
