Soman - Mask

In the saturated world of electronic music today, few stand out, especially amongst the many projects that are combining electronic dance, house, trance, industrial, EBM and power noise into one mixed up genre.  It seems these bands come out a dime-a-dozen, some with vocals, others as instrumental projects and some with a mix. Soman is one that has been picked up by Infacted Recordings and many of us have seen live on the road with the likes of VNV Nation and Imperative Reaction among others.  Though this project touches on many of the before-mentioned genres, it still stands out as one worth sifting through the garbage and picking out as a gem.

Mostly on this disc you'll hear a hard mix of noise, distorted percussion, layer upon layer of synths and electronic loops and a smattering of samples and even a couple of pieces with some female vocals.  The bombardment of distorted noise in "Descent" provides an overpowering introduction and sets the stage for the awesome title track which has become something of a favorite from this disc.  This piece grinds away after a powerful and slow building intro, kicking off with hard-hitting fast-paced percussion.  Gradually more loops build as layers fade in and out and then the mostly spoken word female vocals provide the icing on the cake to this dance-friendly piece.  We're treated with these vocals on one other piece on this album in the form of "Eye To Eye".  This is another selection that is sure to gain momentum on the dance floors with it's powerful techno beat and electronic layers and loops.

With twelve tracks on this album, it's hard to sum it all up in a few words and hard to go into too much detail, especially because with many instrumental albums all the tracks seems to blend together somewhat.  The pieces all drive hard with heavy distortion and plenty of noise elements while still maintaining a dance-friendly beat.  From the heavy droning synths on "Detail" to the heavily trance-influenced loops and elements on "Innocence V.2", the music is driving and never allows for a dull moment to keep the adrenaline pumping.  So for those that like to dance or just like to listen to dance-friendly music, this is a nice selection for you.
